The Monroe County Road Commission (MCRC) has a County Highway Engineer full-time job opening. Responsibilities include:

    • Directs and manages the development and review of engineering plans, specifications and cost estimates for road commission heavy maintenance and construction projects involving roads, bridges, culverts and railroad crossing improvements.
    • Oversees and coordinates the preparation of long- and short-term road and bridge improvement plans and identifies federal, state, private and local funding.
    • Directly or indirectly oversees on-site field inspection monitoring of all engineering projects to assure conformance with plans and specifications and public safety guidelines.
    • Coordinates and directs in conjunction with the Managing Director or his designees all phases of federally assisted construction projects including the development of new programs, securing federal or state funding, preparation of applications and compilation of reports. 
    • Prepares annual Act 51 Project Report and submits to the Department of Transportation.
    • Establishes procedures and guidelines in accordance with state law for permits work within the public rights of way.
    • Coordinates and makes various recommendations to the Department of Transportation [State and Federal] when appropriate.
    • Recommends to the Managing Director or his/her designee, and the Board roadway design polices, guidelines and procedures for constructing and accepting new roads in to the public road system, and implements them as directed by the Managing Director or his/her designee and the Board.
    • Reviews problems with Road Commission personnel, township officials, contractors and engineers and the public to assist them in finding solutions, which are most beneficial to all concerned.
    • Attends seminars and meetings when approved and reads professional journals and magazines to keep abreast of new developments and techniques in road design and construction.
    • May chair Monroe County Federal Aid Committee and may represent Road Commission at regional planning meetings


    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or related field and five (5) years of progressively more responsible professional engineering experience.
    • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan
    • Valid driver license to operate vehicles in Michigan

This position may work forty (40) hours per week. The rate of pay will be from $70,000 to $76,000 per year, depending upon educational background and experience.
